Each year, the D-Day commemorations provide an opportunity to pause, reflect and honour the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those who helped shape the course of history. This year’s D-Day weekend was particularly moving, with a host of events taking place across Normandy and several special occasions hosted at our Château du Baffy, bringing together visitors from around the world to remember, learn and celebrate

Friday: A Time for Reflection

The commemorations began on Friday with a series of memorial services held across Normandy. These moving ceremonies brought together veterans, families, local communities, and visitors from around the world to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who fought during the Normandy Campaign.

Among the most poignant moments of the weekend were the commemorations held at the British Normandy Memorial, where visitors gathered to honour the men and women who played such a vital role in the liberation of Europe. This year’s service was made especially moving by the reading of the Addenda names, ensuring that those whose contributions and sacrifices have been recognised more recently were remembered alongside their comrades. Set against the backdrop of the Normandy coastline, the memorial stands as a powerful tribute to all who served and a lasting symbol of the enduring bond between Britain and France.

Across the region’s historic landscapes, stories of bravery, resilience, and sacrifice were shared and remembered, creating a fitting atmosphere of reflection as the anniversary weekend unfolded.

Saturday: Commemorations, Parades and a Special Reception

Saturday marked the heart of the D-Day commemorations, with a packed programme of events across Normandy. Military parades, commemorative ceremonies, and gatherings drew thousands of visitors to the region, all united in remembrance of the events of June 1944.

This year’s commemorations also marked the unveiling of the new Cecil Newton Memorial at the Royal Dragoon Guards site. Dedicated in honour of Cecil Newton’s service and contribution, the memorial ensures that his legacy, and the sacrifices of his generation, will continue to be remembered and honoured by future generations.

Back at our Château du Baffy, we were delighted to welcome guests for our own special Reception. It was a wonderful opportunity for visitors to come together, share stories, and reflect on the day’s events in a relaxed and welcoming setting. With guests travelling from near and far to experience the commemorations, the reception provided a fitting conclusion to a memorable day.

Sunday: History Comes to Life at the Château

The weekend concluded with a historic display of vintage military Jeeps at our Château. These beautifully preserved vehicles offered visitors a tangible connection to the wartime era, bringing history to life in a way that books and photographs simply cannot.

Guests enjoyed the opportunity to explore the collection, meet owners and enthusiasts and gain a deeper appreciation for the vehicles that played such an important role during and after the war years. The sight of these classic machines against the backdrop of the Normandy countryside created a truly memorable atmosphere.
